German boatbuilder Greenboats, located in Bremen, have specialised in building boats from natural fibre composites. The Flax 27 is their latest stroke of genius – a daysailer with timeless design, made with ampliTex™ technical flax fabrics.
Design and Performance
The Flax 27’s construction plans and classic lines stem from the renowned design team of judel/vrolijk & co. From the onset, the goal of this project was to combine the timeless design with sustainable and innovative high-tech materials. Ultimately though any boat needs to deliver out on the water and the Flax 27 does exactly that. The light structure and modern shapes of the lower hull of the boat result in very fast, sharp and agile handling on the water.
Sustainable High-Tech Materials
Able to build on their experiences made with the GreenBente, Greenboats managed to largely build this unique daysailer from natural and recycled materials. The hull consists of flax fibres in the form of Bcomp’s ampliTex™ technical fabrics paired with a sandwich core consisting of recycled PET bottles. In a classic vacuum infusion process the fibers were infused with a plant-based epoxy resin in order to further reduce the CO2 footprint of the vessel. The deck is covered in naturally beautiful and grippy cork that presents a sustainable alternative to classic teak decking.
About Greenboats
For the better part of the last decade the team of Greenboats has been investing a lot of time and effort to research ways and technologies to replace traditional GFRPs in boat building with natural and sustainable alternatives. Over the course of time and with various projects, such as the GreenBente and the most recent Flax 27 but also non marine projects, the team have built a very profound knowhow when it comes to working with natural fibre reinforced plastics. Current projects of Greenboats include a nacelle for an offshore wind turbine and a camping cab for pick-up trucks made from natural fibre composites.
